Hare Krishna Enterprise — A Century of Tea
The Saha's of Amla Sadarpur in Kustia (present day Bangladesh), a notable family of Zaminders, directed its thrust towards the development of Tea. The family set up Sahabad Tea Estate and Ambari Tea Estate in the late 19th Century in the Dooars Region.
In 1922, Mr. Basanta Kumar Saha, Mr. Sushil Kumar Saha, Mr. Suhrid Kumar Saha & Mr. Sudhanshu Kumar Saha started wholesale & retail of Loose Tea with office at 1, Pollock St. & branch at 2, Lalbazar St., Calcutta under the name "B. K. Saha & Brothers". In 1938 it was incorporated as "B. K. Saha & Brothers Ltd" — a household name in Calcutta and surrounding districts. Their branch at 2, Lalbazar Street (Opposite to Calcutta Police Headquarters) was the highest-selling retail outlet of Tea in Calcutta, earning them the status of a "Chain-Store" — featured in Business Organisation textbooks of Calcutta University B.Com Course from the 60's till 90's. They were among the Founder Indian Tea Merchants registered with the Tea Board of India.
Now, on market demand, Mr. Sudipto Saha — Grandson of Founder Late Sushil Kumar Saha — has re-entered retail with a range of packaged teas sourced from the best gardens of Assam and Bengal (Darjeeling & Dooars).
